The HR Director develops and leads HR practices, objectives and initiatives that foster the school s mission and core values, and the recruitment and retention of diverse and talented faculty and staff.Responsibilities*Provide strategic HR leadership for the School of Dentistry and the HR Service Center.Lead a team of high performing human resources generalists; manage the HRSC budget and oversee staff s performance.Plan and ensure alignment of HR Strategy with the school s strategic plan as it relates to attracting, recruiting, and retaining a diverse and talented faculty and staff.Serve as the internal senior HR advisor to the Dean, Sr.Associate Dean, and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and other members of the school s leadership team regarding sensitive and confidential matters involving faculty, appointments, contracts, and salary recommendations.

Partner with units in the school and university to ensure that faculty and staff appointments and other transactions occur accurately and in a timely manner.Advise, coach and partner with managers and supervisors regarding faculty and staff recruitment and appointment changes.Provide broad oversight of compensation and reclassification requests, and employee/labor relations issues.Develop and implement staff engagement initiatives that support the School of Dentistry as a great place to work and learn, and provide oversight of the school s Staff Forum committee.Approve and manage staff compensation changes and assist Finance with complex faculty salary structures and salary restructuring.Co-facilitate and administer the annual salary increase program for faculty and staff.Oversee HR recruitment of foreign nationals and complex visa immigration issues ensuring compliance with university guidelines and federal law.

Review and resolve reclassification and equity requests; establish and revise salary ranges for posting positions and review salary market data for benchmarking.Recommend, interpret and administer university personnel policies and advise unit management to ensure uniform compliance.Develop and update school HR policies and procedures.Lead investigations and resolutions of employee complaints and grievances.Serve as the school s Affirmative Action Coordinator facilitating a fair, inclusive and equitable faculty and staff search process and adherence to U-M guidelines and federal employment laws.Analyze human resources data, generate options and recommendations, and prepare and oversee reports for internal and external constituents.Provide services consistent with central human resource policies and procedures.Ensure compliance with affirmative action and environmental and safety programs.Required Qualifications*Bachelor s degree in Human Resources Management, business administration, or other relevant degree.Five or more years of high level HR experience performing at a strategic level.

Three to five years supervising or serving as a team lead in an HR unit.Supervisory experience includimg recruiting, mentoring, career development, performance management, leadership, and team building, and a proven ability to lead a team to meet customer expectations.Strong knowledge of human resources strategy, administration, HR emerging trends, organizational development, employee relations, and federal and state employment laws.Demonstrated success in advancing services and policies which support, value and enhance diversity.Considerable experience in the administration of human resource programs including employment, compensation, training, employee relations, labor relations, and organizational effectiveness.Excellent attention to detail and communications skills that include writing, coaching, advising, presenting, influencing and negotiating.Excellent client relationship management skills and ability to resolve issues with diplomacy and tact while building positive relationships with leadership and key stakeholders both internal and external to the school.Comfort with mediating and adjudicating concerns.Demonstrated experience developing training programs and leading major change and HR initiatives.

Ability to effectively adapt to change and make decisions when complete information may be unavailable.Excellent decision-making and problem solving skills.Ability to use analysis, experience, and logical methods to make good decisions and solve problems with effective solutions.Must be able to collaborate with multiple stakeholder and viewpoints to develop creative solutions to problems.Experience with bargained-for contracts and labor relations.

Proficient with MS Office or comparable software, email, and HR databases and information systems such as PeopleSoft.Desired Qualifications*Master degree in a relevant field HR Certification (SPHR/SHRM-SCP).Knowledge of university policies, practices and procedures.Previous experience in a shared services environment.Supervisory experience in an HR unit leading a team in a higher education environment preferably serving both faculty and staff.Considerable experience dealing with ambiguity and handling complex staff and faculty personnel matters.Reasonable HR generalist experience in a complex academic, research, and healthcare environment.Advanced consulting and negotiation skills to advise and counsel management and staff on human resources matters and to facilitate conflict resolution.Background ScreeningThe University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.
